Use the 4 pack for $1

Thursday night I helped my sister-in-law, Karla, chaperon Evyn's 12th birthday party. It was of course a slumber party of 12 squealing, hyperactive girls and one very unhappy 7 year old brother.
Things they did, and did not do...
DID... eat cheese dip, pizza, chocolate fondue, and ice cream cake.
DID NOT...re-enact the the 1985 movie "Clue".
DID... play a crazy game called "I hate Skittles".
DID NOT...sneak boys in and hide them in the closet.
DID...decorate monogrammed pillow cases.
DID NOT...smoke cigarettes under the porch.
DID...play flashlight tag.
DID NOT...drink parents boxed wine.
DID...call boys to find dates to winter cotillion.
DID NOT...run down the street topless screaming "Happy New Year".
DID...talk us into taking them to roll said boys houses.
DID NOT...have the one with the biggest breasts dress-up in her Sunday School clothes to buy beer at the gas station.

All in due time I guess.

Monsters In My Closet!

I took the time this Friday to attack the clutter (i.e. mad mess) in our closet. You see, we are VERY blessed to have such a large closet in this old house. In fact it was one of the MAJOR selling points. But, at times, it gets out of control. I last did closet purge a few months ago and it stayed fairly well organized until a few weeks ago. Apparently when we decide that the organization has been lost we go all out. I mean, go big or go home right? So I spent ~3 hours cleaning/organizing/purging our closet on Friday. Here are the results.

Nothing says Halloween like Elvis

Halloween is by far one of my favorite holidays. All about fun with none of the added pressure. Friday night I went up to Coby's work to take pictures at their Halloween party. What a fun group!
Some of my favorite costumes.

Saturday I deep cleaned the house while Coby did this...

I also finally got my Halloween decor up. It's taken so long b/c of all the rain. We had some people over for chili inbetween trick or treaters but I failed to get any pictures of actual people.

Lastly here is Coby's early Christmas gift. He can't say I never got him anything nice.

First fireplace burn of the season.

Things have slowed down a bit. We've been wading in the waters from the recent excessive rains (my hay bales out front are growing grass!) but we've seem to come out dry and the sunshine has been out for a few days now. We went to see Second City at The Rep the other night and it was really good. Now if I can only convince Coby to take me to see The Wizard of Oz at Robinson.
A friend recently coerced me into reading Twilight. And. I. Am. An. Addict. She lent me the first one and I finished it in 2 days. I called her to get the second but she informed me that her family had the flu and I might want to wait to get it. So I went directly to Target and purchased the second. I started out being a bit embarrassed when asking other people if they had read it, but soon realized- Yes- everyone else has read it. There was no reason to be ashamed. We rented the movie on Saturday (hoping to get our minds off of the defeats of the Hogs and Jermaine Taylor) and were not disappointed. Coby stayed awake during the whole thing. He now finds it hilarious to make the Hannibal Lectuer noises at me in the dark.
Leaving you with a picture of a bulletin board at one of my schools

We wouldn't want the students thinking they were ALL smart, now would we?

Smells like Fall!

I love it. I always say summer is my favorite season but this year I'm not so sure. The weather lately has been great and we've been keeping busy with so many fun things. At the beginning of September I keep thinking about how September is so blah. It's after the excitement of school starting and before the holiday season (which to me begins in October with Halloween). Now that it's over though, I have realized that September is always so packed with "stuff" and it flies by so fast I don't even remember it.
This last week has been a busy one. Coby went to the Dave Matthew's concert with his brother and we had a baby shower at our house for a friend of Coby's, Nathan, and his wife, Kat on Saturday night. It was fall/Razorback themed shower. Friday evening and Saturday day was spent cleaning and cooking. We served pulled pork sandwiches that Coby smoked, cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad, and pumpkin whoopie pies! We got tons of compliments on the food so I posted links to the great recipes. Coby's brother his family from TN were in town all weekend and since we were busy with the shower and barely got to see them we decided last minute to have everyone (family of 16) over for lunch on Sunday. I had to teach Sunday School so Coby was in charge of preparation which he handled beautifully, of course. Needless to say we were EXHAUSTED by the time everyone left around 2:00 on Sunday. We crawled into bed took and two hour nap, woke up but never got out of the bed. Ha! We laid there the rest of the day and still slept soundly all night. Work hard, play hard, rest hard. It was a great weekend. Here are some pictures from the shower!

Did you know tetanus is spelled with an "a"?

Before I was married I had never been to the ER. In my imagination it was an experience that would be full of medics bringing in "a white male with a GSW to the left cerebral artery" or "an black female ejected from vehicle going 80 mph". Morbid? I guess. In high school I was an avid viewer of the early ER years and I love those paramedic shows that are on Discovery Health right before dinner. I have even gone to the extent of trying to convince Coby I should quit my job and become a paramedic.
My dream was finally realized when, during the first week of our marriage, Coby broke out into a major case of the hives. They spread from a small patch on his back to all over his body in ~1/2 hour. Given my medical knowledge, thanks to Discovery Health and a few years working in the hospital, my mind bee lined to worst case scenario. Swelling in the mouth and throat causing suffocation or anaphylactic shock and me without an EpiPen! So to the ER we went. After 2 hours, 3 benadryl by mouth, one benadryl shot, one steroid shot, and a steroid pack the adventure was over. No GSW, no car ejection.
Sunday when Coby's "scratch" (as he called it to begin with) turned into a small puncture wound by a old rusty wire fence it was off the the ER again. Coby was cleaning the easement behind the fence in the backyard. You see, the residents on either side of the easement are responsible for keeping the area clear. Since the neighbor behind us seems to think his only contribution to "the village" should be letting his 4 dogs out to bark at 5:30 on Saturday mornings, Coby spent the afternoon clearing small trees. He came in around 3:00 saying he scratched himself and I didn't bother to task any questions. At 7:30 when he call to say that his arm was swelling, and red, and it hurt to move the real story came out. Of course my thoughts went to the worst. When was his last tetanus shot? What if he nicked a nerve or tendon? What if some insane bacteria is infecting his "money makin" arm? If he can't hold a knife, then what?
Once in the ER it became apparent that we were in real danger of contracting H1N1. Sickly looking people. One lady was taken back, asked the standard medical questions, and returned to the waiting room (to wait on a vacant bed) with a mask. She then proceeded to use the mask as a BOOK MARK!!! I just don't even know what to say or think about this.
Meanwhile, we hear the automatic doors open and then smell an overwhelming stench of gasoline. It is the smell that makes your nostrils and the back of your throat burn. A woman comes racing in with a girl (~10 years old) in her arms. The girl is screaming and shirtless, with a cloth over her eyes. Apparently the mom was dealing with the debit card in the gas pump while the girl pulled the still pumping nozzle out of the car and poured it all over her face and body. Terrible! I pray that she is okay. I know she probably is but what an accident! Something I'm sure happens more often than we think.
Presently, Coby's arm is still swollen and a little more red than yesterday. He has had a tetanus shot, an antibiotic shot, and is on oral antibiotics. Hopefully the swelling and redness will be gone by tomorrow.
